Wallmapu, January 2025
On January 7, the Mapuche Photography and Visual Studies Center will be officially launched, marking a milestone in the recovery and dissemination of the visual heritage of the Mapuche people. This website, developed in collaboration between the Centro de Documentación Mapuche Ñuke Mapu and Cenfoto-UDP, aims to strengthen the identity and historical memory of the Mapuche people through photography.
A Collaborative Photographic Collection
The archive of the Center includes contributions from:
- Jorge Calbucura Collection (1999)
- Felipe Durán Collection (2000-2023)
- Press Archive and Negatives of Diario La Nación de Chile (1980-2003)
- Independent Reporters Association (ARI) Archive (2009-2024)
Each collection offers a unique perspective on Mapuche photography, highlighting key moments that have shaped its visual identity.
An Innovative Approach to Reflect on Identity
The Center employs a methodology based on multiple aesthetics, fostering the participation of the Mapuche community and promoting the analysis of images as tools for constructing historical memory. This collective approach highlights emerging visualities and their contribution to the Mapuche people's unique cultural narrative.
Open Access and Interactive Tools
Starting on January 7, 2025, the website will be available to the Mapuche community, researchers, and the public to explore the archive. It will offer:
- Advanced searches by theme, author, or date.
- Collaboration spaces to enrich the archive.
- Educational resources to reflect on the relationship between imagery, history, and identity.
Join the Project
The Center invites researchers, students, and interested individuals to join this collective effort to preserve and celebrate the visual memory of the Mapuche people.
