Mapuche and solidarity organisations in Europe hereby initiate a campaign for the defence of Human Rights of Mapuche political prisoners currently on hunger strike.

From 12th July 2010 thirty-one Mapuche committed to hunger strike in the prisons of Valdivia, Concepción, Temuco, Lebu and Angol. Mapuche political prisoners on hunger strike are demanding the right to fair trials, freedom of all Mapuche political prisoners and the repeal of the Anti-Terrorist Law.
Mapuche political prisoners have endured over 20 days of hunger strike and medical reports indicate the development of serious health conditions.
The coalition organizations appeal to global public opinion for solidarity and political support for the Mapuche people's struggle for justice, freedom and self-determination. We also state that we are holding a petition in order to express a united voice in support for the political prisoners, in an attempt to encourage the Chilean government to respond to the demands of the Mapuche hunger strikers. Above all we seek to arouse the conscience of the authorities responsible for the potential injury and loss of life, and to the potential escalation of the conflict between the Chilean State and the Mapuche nation.
