Urgent Press Release

Mapuche resident in Europe and North America

March 10, 2002

The situation at Alto Bio-Bio in the Pewenche territory is highly conflictive. Throughout Chile people are mobilizing in support for the Pewenche Resistance.

During the celebration of Woman Day, in a coordinated manner, our Mapuche sisters took the opportunity to denounce the situation that Pewenche people are facing.

Even though the mal treatment they suffered by the security agents, they successfully achieved the objective of denouncing to the public the government repressive attitude against those who resist the construction of Ralco Dam on the Bio-Bio River.

The police are ready for another repressive offensive at any moment. Near the town of Santa Barbara, 40 kilometers of Ralco-Lepoy, there is a considerable number of police force.  They are well equipped with all type of  offensive armament. We are concerned that in the next hours or days, another act of repression is going to happen.  It is known that by Monday, March 11, the generator for the Ralco Dam will arrive at the construction site.  This whole operation is escortted by giant military deployment.

On behalf of our sisters of Mapu Domuche Newen (Women with the Strength of Earth) we would like to ask our friends, brothers and sisters to begin denouncing in all national and international media and human rights organizations, the actual facts of the reality that our Pewenche brothers and sisters are living at this moment.

In our Mapuche web pages, there is information, from the Chilean Press as well as from different Mapuche organizations. Our Mapuche communication network is already in contact with our Pewenche sisters and we are prepared to keep updated with the immediate information in relation to the up coming events.

In the VIII and IX Region of Araucania there are 150 Mapuche procecuted by differnt Justice Courts.  35 of them have been condemed under the framework denominated “Mapuche Conflict”.

At this moment, 44 men and 11 women are detained in the Centro de Detención Preventiva Women Prison of the City of Chillán, Ñuble.  They are being questioned by a Military Tribunal under de direction of Mr. Ivan Santivañez.

Among the detainees there are Chilean workers from  builder constractor companies; one of them Juan Moreno Jara, union leader, as wellas all the board members of the Pewenche Community of Ralco-Lepoy: María Curriao, Mario Curiao, y Vicente Sepulveda.

Our Demand is: The Chilean Government has to stop the implementing the  project of the hidroelectric plan at the Alto Bio - Bio, the construction of the Ralco Dam.  It is a fact that any Mapuche organizacion of the region does not support the building of Ralco Dam

We encourage everyone to ask The Chilean authorities to STOP RALCO!  Send messajes to the Chilean Government:

Presidente de la República de Chile

Press Release

Mapu Domuche Newen

Women with the Strenght of Earth

Alto Bio Bio, Thursday, February 28, 2002

MAPU DOMUCHE NEWEN, the group of women in resistance against the constuction of Ralco Dam, would like to to let the public opinion know through the press media that today, Thursday, February 28, 2002, we will intent to stop the tranportation of the electric generator of ENDESA (National corporation Of Electricity), a transnational Spanish company.  This action is another act to impose preasure against the Pewenche families who oppose to be relocated from their ancestral territories and culture.

We denounce that ENDESA is acting illegaly in trying to continue the construction of the Ralco Dam and carrying on with the transportation of those generators  There are seven families who are opposed to relocation.

We also  would like to denounce that ENDESA is paying Carabineros (Police) and military personnel their accomodation while they are looking after the transportation of the generators.  This is unacceptable in a democratic state.  The Chilean government is protecting the private interprise against the Mapuche aboriginal rights, which are recognized by Law.

Alto Bio Bio, Thursday, February 6, 2002

We would like to inform that 55 Pehuenche brothers an sisters  (Elders, adults, youth and women were detained by carabineros (Police) in Quepuca-Ralco and they are now tried by the Military Court in the city of Chillan.

Among the detainees is the leader Maria Currio, as well as the following residents of the communities of Ralco-Lepoy and Quepuca-Ralco: Lucy Reinao, Aurelia Jara Curriao, Marcela Jaquelyn Jara, Fresia Levi, Maria Levi, Carola Jara, Mirella Calpan, Lucy Curriao, Silvia Reinao, Maria Salome Jara, Jenny Soledad Salamanca Jara, Orlando Jara, Rogelio Jara, Jose Benedicto Jara, Jaime Reinao, Alberto Curriao Reinao, Luis Curriao, Carlos Reinao Curriao, Angel Reinao, Juan Huenchucan Curriao y Guillermo Salamanca.

Names of all the peopleapprehended are unavailable, because Carabineros have denied access to any information citing a secrecy of information. Other detainees are Chilean workers of ENDESA. (National Enterprise of  electricity)

A delegation of Mapu Domuche Newen visited yesterday (Tuesday) the 4th Carabineros Station of Los Angeles to obtain information about the persons who had been detained and to ask abuot their well-being; knowing about the un - necessary force and housebreaking of Pehuenche residents. Carabineros denied access to their building and kept our delegation half a block away of their premises.

The 55 detainees are crowded at the Police Station also the Mapu Domuche Newen, was able to verify, while witnessed the detention, that many of the detainees were punched and are wounded.

Lawyers Alex Quevedo, Matias Coll, Roberto Celedon, Rodrigo Lillo y Sergio Fuensalida are demanding  the Pehuenche's human rights. They also protest against the excessive use of force executed by the police forces, as well as mistreatment of the detainees.  These actions attempt against basic human rights.

Mapu Domuche Newen considered that the declarations of the Police Officer in charge of Carabineros that led the repressive operation, did not reflect the truth of the facts. He declared that the Police was mistreated by the unarmed and defenseless Pehuenche protesters; we know that Carabineros used two helicopters , armored vehicles and special forces to repress the protest.

We denounce the allegations against Nicolasa and Berta Quintreman; Mr. Rene Correa, Mayor of  Santa Barbara town, mentioned that our sister are being used by “others”.

In conclusion, with regards to these tragic events of Tuesday, March 5, we ask for solidarity for all our Mapuche brothers and sisters, and your concrete support for our demands to defend our lands from the construction of Ralco Dam in our sacred Pehuenche territories
